Annual Count Competency

Good morning all,
I am really soaking up this topic for several reasons.
  1. I am a relatively new periop educator looking for ideas on setting up and implementing "competency days" that are meaning full
  2. There has been much discussion about instrument counts related to minimally invasive procedures ex: lap appys, lap choleys, lap hernias. I would like to hear what other facilities are doing
  3. My facility is thinking about the sponge detector technology-thoughts?
  4. I agree with some form of yearly education regarding counts as we have a mixture of new and veteran staff.
  5. Bad habits!

Please send a count competency also. Working in an ASC it tends to be the norm not to count because no orifices are opened. I have seen a raytec lost in a foot.

Not counting is certainly NOT the norm in our 2 ASC's. We always count going in, we count at an  appropriate time in closing as well.
We even count 8-0 through 10-0 sutures in eye cases, even though they are not detectable radiographically.

We are looking at the samething. The hospital is reviewing the various tools that can be added to the counting process and we will need to develop a competency on the revised process. So if anyone has one developed already and is willing to share it will reduce the amount of extra work I may need to do to develop one from scratch. The hospital I am at has decided to go with the Donna Wright process for Competency. The previous process was a fair and checklists but due to expenses we are now changing directions.

So anything your willing to share would be helpful.

Hello,
We recently changed/updated our count boards and our policy, therefore instead of an actual competency checkoff, we reviewed the new changes and then followed up with real time audits.
